Precision in Action: Crews Set Massive Girders for Sable Boulevard Bridge

Ames Construction hit an exciting milestone in Colorado in mid-November, setting a dozen girders for the Sable Boulevard Bridge over E-470.

Each girder measures 120 feet in length, stands 72 inches tall, and weighs 67 tons. Using two 500-ton hydraulic cranes, Ames crews rigged, set, and braced one girder every 30 minutes, completing the operation in just three hours each night over two consecutive nights.

The work was supported by key subcontractors including GDT Traffic Control, EnCon Colorado, Apex Transportation, RMS Cranes, and Crimson Engineering Associates. To ensure safety and efficiency, Ames coordinated full closures of E-470 and Sable Boulevard with the E-470 Public Highway Authority, the City of Brighton, Adams County, and Colorado Department of Transportation.

The E-470 and Sable Boulevard Intersection project broke ground in May 2025. Project scope includes:

• The construction of four ramps to complete a full diamond interchange with Sable Boulevard.

• Major widening of the Sable Boulevard Bridge over the E-470 Public Highway.

• Realignment of Aurora Water’s Prairie Waters Pipeline.

The project is on track to be completed in late 2026.
