2025 MSHA AZ Spring Thaw Training Workshop in Arizona
Mining professionals are five times more likely to lose a coworker to suicide than to a work-related injury or illness. This is one of the sobering facts Ames’ Rory Wilson shared at the 2025 MSHA AZ Spring Thaw training workshop in Arizona.
As Operational Risk & Wellness Area Manager in Ames Construction’s Western region, Rory works to change perceptions around mental health and suicide.
Addressing MSHA officials, Arizona state mine inspectors, mine clients, and contractors, Rory discussed the risk factors for the construction and mining industries and the resources available to us. Most importantly, he emphasized the need to break the stigma by discussing these topics within our teams and among mining professionals across the country.
“It’s about educating our leaders and empowering our people to open up and talk!” he says.
