Women in Construction Week Spotlight: Martha Pierce

Ames Construction is proud to celebrate the extraordinary women on our team during Women in Construction Week—and every day of the year!

As we celebrate WIC Week and Women’s History Month, we’ll shine a spotlight on some of the women who contribute to the present and future of Ames and the entire heavy civil and industrial construction industry.

→ What advice would you give women looking to join the construction industry?

It’s tough, especially with the men who believe a woman can’t succeed. To earn respect in a workplace that is predominantly male, you need to work harder for the same thing. If you want to quit, don’t! Get up and push harder.

→ Did you face any challenges when you first started in the construction industry? If so, what types of challenges, and how did you overcome them?

Yes, of course. All women face a challenge in this business. At first, it’s tough trying to get men to take you seriously, but once they see who you are and what you can do, it changes.

→ What does the future hold for women in construction?

I believe the future holds a lot of promise. There are so many women in construction in different crafts who have succeeded. Recruiting women into the construction industry is a solid way to address the pressing need for workers. We need more women because we need more people.
