Women in Construction Week Spotlight: Linda Zavala
Ames Construction is proud to celebrate the extraordinary women on our team during Women in Construction Week—and every day of the year!
As we celebrate WIC Week and Women’s History Month, we’ll shine a spotlight on some of the women who contribute to the present and future of Ames and the entire heavy civil and industrial construction industry.

→ What led you to join the construction industry?
I had just left the cable industry, where I performed installs and repair work. I still wanted to work outside, but doing something different. My husband was already in construction, running equipment. He suggested getting into the apprenticeship program. I applied and went to work immediately.
→ Did you face any challenges when you first started in the construction industry? If so, what types of challenges, and how did you overcome them?
Yes, there were lots of challenges. In the past, it was mostly a man’s industry. There were lots of negative remarks. Women were not welcome. I learned to just ignore the comments and walk away. You just have to keep showing up and do the best you can.
→ What does the future hold for women in construction?
There is definitely a future for women in the industry. We are seeing more and more women running equipment. We are accepted now more than ever. Women are encouraging their daughters, friends, and sister to join. This industry is changing for the better.
