Women in Construction Week Spotlight: Kylie Tokunaga
Ames Construction is proud to celebrate the extraordinary women on our team during Women in Construction Week—and every day of the year!
As we celebrate WIC Week and Women’s History Month, we’ll shine a spotlight on some of the women who contribute to the present and future of Ames and the entire heavy civil and industrial construction industry.

→ What do you like best about working in construction?
I like being a part of a project from start to end. Seeing the finished product makes you appreciate the fine details and hard work that went into the job.
→ Did you face any challenges when you first started in the construction industry? If so, what types of challenges, and how did you overcome them?
I was welcomed with open arms into the Ames family. Unfortunately, there were a few occasions when I felt disregarded by other members of the industry because of my gender. I overcame this by confiding in mentors I trusted, educating myself in subjects I did not understand, and working on my confidence.
→ Do you believe that women are given the same opportunities for career growth as men? If not, what changes would you like to see, and how quickly would you expect this change to occur?
I believe it depends on the company and the people in leadership. I have been supported, encouraged, and given the same opportunities for career growth at Ames. I do not believe other women are as fortunate. Change begins at the leadership level and has a domino effect. The speed of change depends on commitment to the cause.
