Women in Construction Week Spotlight: April Lee

Ames Construction is proud to celebrate the extraordinary women on our team during Women in Construction Week—and every day of the year!

As we celebrate WIC Week and Women’s History Month, we’ll shine a spotlight on some of the women who contribute to the present and future of Ames and the entire heavy civil and industrial construction industry.

→ What advice would you give women looking to join the construction industry?

Don’t be intimidated by the idea of being in a male-dominated profession, the work performed, or the machines you operate or work around. It is a very fulfilling and rewarding job.

→ How can construction attract more female candidates?

The women in construction today are the best way to attract more women. Arm us with supplies to make it easy to talk to women candidates and give them resources to learn more. Maybe offer hands-on workshops. Some women need reassurance that they can do the work without judgment before they invest in changing or starting a new career.

→ What does the future hold for women in construction?

I believe there will be an influx of women in construction because the field is constantly making strides to be more inclusive.
