The award-winning I-35W & Crosstown Highway 62 interchange project was one of the largest east-west, north-south freeway interchange reconstruction projects ever performed in Minnesota. It was also the first project in the state to use precast segmental bridges.
The joint venture team of Ames Construction, Lunda Construction, and Shafer Contracting executed the project while traffic flowed through the interchange at a rate averaging more than 240,000 vehicles per day. Lane closures were not allowed during the day, so much of the hauling and construction was carried out at night. Over the three-year span of the project, MnDOT allowed only nine full freeway shutdowns to accomplish intersecting tasks. The reconstructed freeway corridor more than doubled traffic lane capacity.
The joint venture team built two bridges over the environmentally sensitive Minnehaha Creek that flows through the project. Five segmental bridges consisting of 75-ton components were cast off-site and transported to the project.
